The Competition is an initiative of AGTA and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland (RGSQ) and is proudly sponsored by National Geographic Channel.
High-scoring students are announced in early May and the results distributed to schools at the end of May. Australia’s team to the next National Geographic World Championship is chosen from this Final. Our team to the International Geography Olympiad is selected from high-scoring students in the Competition’s senior division.

The competition is about students using any spatial technology in challenging, informative and fun ways to assist in solving a problem from any area of the curriculum. By using GIS, the project will demonstrate the means for adding geography/position/space to the investigation of the problem. The project team should strive to use the extensive functionality of GIS to meaningfully explore the spatial relationships of the data covering their subject area.
The competition provides schools with a chance to be innovative and creative in solving any real world problem of interest to students and teachers. It is open to primary and secondary students. To help teachers and students, mentors from the spatial industry are allocated to schools to assist and guide them with their projects. GIS software can be arranged for schools, which have the chance to win computing technology for their school.
The competition is conducted in each State and Territory of Australia, and New Zealand. A prize is awarded for the best project in each region. The winners of each region are then judged to determine the Regional Winner.
Schools need to register their interest by May with a deadline for entries in late October (most schools conduct their projects in Term 3).
