The GTAV Study Tour to Vanuatu was the 13th overseas GTAV study tour organised by Barrie Jones. Old friendships were renewed and new ones were made. The Vanuatu tour group consisted of 15 Geography teachers, partners and friends who all appeared to enjoy the experience enormously. It was especially pleasing to see that there were 8 people in the group participating in their first GTAV study tour.
Standing on the rim of the highly active Mount Yasur volcano in Tanna, to see an awesome display of pyrotechnics exploding into the night sky and the informative presentations given by a representative from Vanuatu Tourism, a vulcanologist who had been working in Vanuatu for the past 10 years and by Denise Miles who has now been living in Vila for almost 2 years
Our two day stay at Evergreen Resort in Tanna, where we enjoyed the wonderful laid- back atmosphere of the resort and the excellent buffet dinners
Our visit to the Vanuatu Central School, where we were warmly welcomed by the inspiring Principal, the Librarian and the Year 11 Geography teacher and her senior students
Our tour of the alternative energy processing plant in Vila which turns coconut oil into fuel oil and the wind farm where a bank of 11 large windmills supplies power to the Vila electricity grid
The day trip on board the motor yacht Coongoola, where we snorkeled in pristine waters and enjoyed an excellent barbeque lunch on the beach.
Sponsoring the release of a one year old hawkesbill turtle into the wild, as part of a Turtle Conservation Programme
The Sunset Cruise of Vila harbour during which we enjoyed local beer, wine, canapés and the great company of our fellow travellers.
