couple places to start is with DSE in Victoria and Geoscience Australia. DSE offers schools $500 worth of map data each year from their website. Not sure on the point of contact but if you send them an email they should be able to help. Also, GeoScience Australia has in the past distributed a couple of cds with the map data you were looking for. Either email them or Mick Laws, a teacher seconded to ESRI for a copy.

We haven't taught Geography at VCE level at our school for a number of years and I am hoping to reintroduce unit 1 in 2008. The school has purchased "Mapping Our World" by ESRI and I will be spending some time familiarising myself with it over the next 6 months. Is it possible to access geology/soils/hydrosphere/land use/climate data sets for particular regions? I am looking particularly for national parks in NE Victoria (perhaps Mt Buffalo). Any other suggestions for a (hopefuly) new unit 1 geography teacher woud be welcome.

[Geography fieldwork] Fieldwork versus Excursions

Geographers 'carry out' Fieldwork, others 'take part' in excursions. The former is 'active learning', the latter 'passive learning'.

Through making a clear distinction between the two [Fieldwork and Excursions], Geographers set their discipline apart from others and maximise the effective learning and interest of their students.

What elements underpin effective 'Fieldwork' and distinguish it from an 'Excursion'?

To open the discussion, I would like to [simplistically] suggest that an Excursion is a 'show-and-tell' exercise, where the participant is a passive recipient of the experience[s] presented to them.

Fieldwork, I would hope has more concrete elements that encourage [ensure] that the participant is actively engaged in real learning. Some of these elements include:
1. Involvement in, and planning of, the purpose[s] of the fieldwork.
2. Real world data collection.
3. Individual, small group and whole group contribution to tasks.
4. Appropriate and sequential skill development.
5. Processing, analysis and reporting [individually] of the [collective] results of the exercise, back in class
6. Reflection and evaluation of the exercise.

I think it would be interesting to share ideas on these intial thoughts. To critique or develop them further. To suggest examples of how, or ways of ensuring, these elements are addressed in our fieldwork.

During the past 50 years thousands of Geography teachers have been members of the GTAV.

They have attended professional development activities, annual conferences, written articles for Interaction, contributed to the writing of resource materials, led fieldtrips and overseas study tours, attended regional network meetings, been members of the committee and held office on the executive. But, where are they now? Are they still teaching, have they moved to a different location, taken on a new career? We would love to hear from them and contact them so that they can participate in the celebrations to be held during 2009.

We also want to hear your recollections of what it was like to be a Geography teacher and member of the association in the past. What do you remember most, who had the greatest influence on your Geography teaching and why? What were the most significant things that you gained from being a member of the GTAV?

Come on, share with us your memories that helped to make the GTAV the great association it is today!

How should we celebrate the occasion of the GTAV's 50th anniversary?

How can we ensure that it is as inclusive as possible so that all members have a sense of participating? Should we hold special functions, if so, where might they be held and with what format? How do we ensure that members in Mildura, Portland or Mallacoota can share in the celebrations?

Should we produce commemorative items, publications or resources? What sorts of things would be appropriate? Many organisations produce memorabilia to mark a special occasion. Do we need such items or can we think more laterally and come up with something different?

Please share your thoughts and ideas!

For me, this is a the most exciting and challenging aspect of the 50th anniversary celebrations.

We need to ask challenging questions about the things that can and should be done in the future to meet the needs of Geography students and teachers.

We must be prepared to open our minds to a range of new possiblities about the ways in which the Association can support the professional needs of our members.

The 50th anniversary provides an oppoprtune time for all members to share their thoughts and vision for the ways in which the GTAV can continue to provide meaningful and valuable support to all of its members. Be imaginative, be creative and most importnatly think 'outside of the square'. I look forward to reading your comments.

One of the most frequently asked questions by Geography teachers is “Where can my students obtain datasets of census boundaries?” Students undertaking comparisons of a wide range of socio-economic and demographic data often undertake investigations that require comparisons of data for local, regional and statewide regions. So, I was delighted to receive an email from colleague Pat Beeson indicating that a very valuable source of GIS map boundaries were available for download from the ABS website. The datasets are for each of the Australian states and territories for collection districts, statistical districts, local government areas, regional and statewide levels. The datasets are in MapInfo MIF format, but users of ArcView can readily convert these to shapefiles. The datasets can be accessed from the ABS website at http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/DetailsPage/1259.0.30.0022006?OpenDocument.
