About Us

 

The Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV) is a member based professional teaching association that assists Geography teachers in Victoria. The GTAV is committed to excellence in geographical education in Victoria. We strive to achieve this by: 

  • providing leadership in geographical education; 
  • promoting the value and place of geography teaching and learning; 
  • fostering participation of, and collaboration between students, teachers and the wider community; and by 
  • providing quality services and support. 

The GTAV is a membership based organisation committee developed for the professional development of teachers, academics, students and others interested in geographical education. 

The GTAV has been an active non-profit professional association for over 60 years. Through our program and services, we aim to promote Geography, geographical education and its importance to society.

OUR MISSION

The GTAV is a professional membership association dedicated to advancing geographical education from Foundation to Year 12 across Victoria. Our purpose is to support teachers and students and to engage with the wider community about the vital role of Geography in creating sustainable and resilient futures. Through the provision of high quality resources, professional learning and advocacy, we empower educators and students to make well informed and responsible choices in a dynamic world.

 

 

 

 

OUR HISTORY

The GTAV was established in 1959. A meeting chaired by Mrs Woolacott was held on 29 June 1957 at Mercer House, in Melbourne, Victoria at which time an Interim Committee was formed comprising Mr Alex Lyne (Chairman), Mr Jock Herbert (Secretary) and Miss Una Boyle (Treasurer). On 5 August 1957. Alex Lyne chaired the first official meeting of the GTAV at Mercer House and the name 'Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria' was accepted.

In 1999 a booklet entitled, 'Celebrating 40 years of Excellence in Geographic Education 1959 - 1999', was preocuded by Geoffrery Paterson listing members of past committee and recording key people and activities. In 2009, the GTAV celebrated its 50th anniversary with the publication of 'GTAV: The first 50 years'. A celebratory dinner attended by over 100 guests was held on Sunday 23 August 20
