2010 Vanuatu Study Tour


    • Depart from Melbourne Airport (Domestic) on Qantas flight QF624 to Brisbane at 2:05 pm. Arrive at the Domestic Terminal at 4:15 pm and transfer to the Brisbane International Terminal, to board our Air Vanuatu flight, departing at 6-50 pm. Arrive in Vila at 10:20 pm and transfer to the Coconut Palms Resort (Tel: 0011 678 23696) for our 4 night stay.
  • MON 28 JUNE : VILA (B, D)
    • After breakfast we go on an Orientation City Tour of Port Vila. At the completion of the tour you will have the opportunity to visit the Museum to gain an insight into the traditional lifestyle and culture of the people of Vanuatu. This afternoon we will be given a talk on everyday life in Vila from the perspective of an expat Australian (Denise Miles) and a presentation on the importance of tourism to the Vanuatu economy by a representative from the Vanuatu Tourism Board. Tonight we will enjoy a Welcome Barbeque Dinner at our hotel.
    • Today’s full day tour will take us for a drive around Efate, the island on which Vila is situated. During the day we will stop at Klems Hill Lookout, for superb views over Port Vila and surrounding areas, have a chance to swim in the clear ocean waters, have lunch at a local restaurant and take a traditional outrigger canoe ride to a traditional village, where will see custom dancing and have a chance to explore the village.
  • WED 30 JUNE : VILA (B, D)
    • This morning we will make a short stop at a local school, before visiting some of Vila’s alternative energy suppliers. Later this afternoon we will be given a presentation by a local vulcanologist, which should provide us with important background information for tomorrow’s trip to Tanna. Tonight we will enjoy a Melanesian feast and show at the Melanesian Hotel.
  • THU 1 JULY : VILA – TANNA (B, D)
    • Morning free, until we transfer to the airport for our 2 pm Air Vanuatu flight to Tanna. On arrival at 2:40 pm we will transfer to the Evergreen Resort (Tel: 0011 678 68774), located only 5 mins from the airport. Rest of day is free for snorkelling on the reef or to enjoy short walks around the local area.
  • FRI 2 JULY : TANNA (B, L, D)
    • This morning you may wish to take one of several tours offered by the hotel to show visitors the traditional lifestyle of the people of Tanna (additional cost). Later this afternoon we will leave on a bumpy 2 hour ride to see the erupting Mount Yasur volcano. We will go as close as we are allowed to safely go.
  • SAT 3 JULY : TANNA – VILA (B, D)
    • After an early breakfast transfer to the airport to board Air Vanuatu flight departing at 8:55 am for Vila. On arrival in Vila at 9:40 am transfer back to the Coconut Palms Resort (Tel: 0011 678 23696), for another 4 nights. Rest of day free. You may wish to go take the local taxi-bus and go swimming at Erakor Island. Tonight’s dinner will be at L’Houstalet – Vila’s oldest and best loved French restaurant.
  • SUN 4 JULY : VILA (B)
    • Day free until our late afternoon 2 hour sunset cruise. During the cruise we will enjoy local beer, French wine and canapés, served while we watch the sunset over Port Vila harbour.
    • Full day’s outing on board the Coongoola – a 23 metre sailing ketch. We will sail the calm waters of Havannah Harbour, relax on the white coral sand beaches, swim in the crystal clear warm water, snorkel or dive on beautiful coral reefs and have a delicious barbeque lunch on the beach.
    • This morning we will travel to Hideaway Island for some of the best snorkelling in the Vila area. After lunch on the island we will return to our hotel. This evening we will enjoy a Farewell Barbeque Dinner at Coconut Palms.
    • Morning free, before early afternoon transfer to the airport to board Air Vanuatu flight NF10 departing at 3:10 pm, direct to Sydney. On arrival in Sydney we have to transfer to the Domestic Terminal for our Qantas flight (QF487) back to Melbourne, departing at 8:00 pm. Arrive in Melbourne at 9:35 pm.
